HOME Digital Switchover

The Digital TV Switchover Explained

Digital Switchover affects any TV that receives its signal from an aerial installation.  By 2012 all of the channels in the UK will be broadcast in digital and the existing analogue broadcast will be switched off.

If your TV uses an aerial installation, it will receive its signal from a transmitter. There are more than 1,150 transmitters organised into around 80 groups that will switch to digital one by one. Each group has a main digital switchover transmitter and local relay transmitters.

Before digital switchover, local relay transmitters are only able to transmit an analogue TV signal. After switchover, they will transmit a digital TV signal.

It is important you know which transmitter you will be watching as this determines:
  • Your digital switchover date.
  • The number of channels you receive.
Transmitter signals overlap, so you may have a choice of which one you can watch.
  • Watching a main transmitter you will receive more than 40 digital TV channels.
  • Watching a relay transmitter you will receive around 20 TV channels.
If you want to point your aerial towards a main transmitter contact our aerial installation engineers.
